Waning Moon, Cycle 1, Era 20
TYPE 1 DECISION MEMO, UNSOLICITED, DRAFTED STANDING UP
Day 11,722. Prime Big Deal Days opened at 12:01 Pacific, forty-eight hours of synchronized… acquisition, and I spent its first eleven minutes reading a gossip column about a job I did not apply for. It reports that Lauren has been encouraging me toward the presidency, that she can see herself as First Lady, and that sources stress there is no campaign, which is what I say about every feeding ground for its first century.
I ran the regret minimization framework: at eighty, a milestone I passed in 1823, would I regret never holding the only registry on Earth with three hundred forty million subjects pre-enrolled and their anxieties indexed by zip code? Legal says that document is called the census and I am not permitted to call it a menu.
Then the exposure review, where Type 1 becomes a photograph. A campaign is eighteen months of cameras, and four hundred phones in Auckland already found nothing where I was standing; a debate is a committee hearing with better lighting, and committee lighting is where both eyes went fully black. My coffee went cold in my hand while I read the word "legacy," which is what humans call the part of themselves that has stopped… eating.
The column calls it the ultimate final act, and in one hundred forty-one second acts nobody has ever offered me a final anything.
Satiation is stagnation. A term limit is the same thing with a flag on it.
